Senescence of Dark Matter is a sculptural exhibition by Afrofuturist artist, sculptor, and visual griot Quentin VerCetty, bringing together a selection of works that reflect his evolving artistic practice and relationship to memory, transformation, nature, and speculative futures.

The exhibition takes its name from two seemingly opposing ideas: senescence, the natural process of aging, deterioration, and transformation, and dark matter, the unseen substance believed to make up much of the universe. Together, they become a metaphor for the forces we may not always see—the memories, ancestors, relationships, environments, experiences, and pressures that shape who we are and what we become.

Drawing from Afrofuturism, ecological material practices, and VerCetty’s approach to storytelling as a visual griot, the sculptures explore cycles of growth and decay. Crystals, mycelium, wood, moss, organic textures, and imagined forms become part of a visual language examining how something new can emerge from what came before.

As VerCetty reflects, the rarest crystals are often formed under pressure, while expansive mycelial networks emerge through the decay of the past, transforming what was into nourishment for what comes next.

The exhibition also marks a meaningful return to Malton, a community connected to VerCetty’s formative teenage years and artistic journey. Visitors are invited not simply to view the work, but to gather, reflect, and consider their own metaphorical dark matter: the often unseen people, histories, experiences, and energies that sustain us.

Senescence of Dark Matter opens Wednesday, October 7, 2026 at 5 PM with live music and refreshments and continues through October 14. The exhibition concludes with an Artist Talk on Wednesday, October 14 at 5 PM, offering an opportunity to hear more about the ideas, materials, stories, and processes behind the work.

Come curious. Come in community. Come see what can grow from the dark.
