Vox Rea
Vox Rea, the Canadian indie-pop collective fronted by sisters Kate and Lauren Kurdyak, crafts
cinematic, introspective soundscapes that blur the lines between poetry and philosophy. Students
of existential thought, the band marries the musings of Nietzsche and Heidegger with modern
synth-laden textures, creating music that is both intellectually rich and emotionally raw. Their
sound blends Laurel Canyon harmonies with the dreamlike allure of Lana Del Rey and the
haunting intensity of Jeff Buckley.
Since their debut single, “Dose Me Up” (2020), Vox Rea has amassed over 1M streams on
Spotify, landing on playlists like New Music Friday Canada and Indie Pop. Their songs have
appeared on BBC Radio 6, CBC, and stations across Canada, with the track “Damn (Unstuck)”
earning the top spot on Folk & Friends and being named one of Spotify’s Top Folk Songs of
2021. Their cinematic sound has also been featured in shows like Netflix’s Sweet Magnolias and
Orphan Black.
Their sophomore album, Art Oracles, recorded in a cabin on southern Vancouver Island, is a
meditation on fate, freedom, and the weight of time. Inspired by the staggering beauty of the
West Coast, the album weaves natural imagery into a sonic tapestry of existential longing and
emotional catharsis. Exploring the art of letting go—of relationships, expectations, and the
illusion of control—Art Oracles brims with raw vulnerability, from the piano-driven opener “Oh
Mama” to the a cappella-inspired “Hard”, conceived during a walk through a rainforest. The
sisters’ seamless vocal interplay—Kate’s smoky alto and Lauren’s willowy soprano—creates
intricate, choral harmonies that are both intimate and expansive.
The album’s final act is elemental, with the folk-inspired “Grass” mourning time lost to
comparison, “Electric” glowing with silver-lining harmonies, and “Captain” closing the record
with a salt-swept meditation on indecision as its own kind of choice.
Renowned for their captivating live performances, Vox Rea has toured extensively across North
America, the UK, and Europe, gracing stages at The Great Escape, SXSW, Reeperbahn, and
Treefort Music Fest, among others. With a growing global following, they continue to mesmerize
audiences with their profound sound and emotive presence.
In ancient times, prophecy and poetry were one and the same. With Art Oracles, Vox Rea summons their own vision—sing, O muses, of the agony of change, and the ecstasy of growth.
