We all seek sanctuary in various forms.

Laura Lucas finds spiritual shelter and solace within music. The Canada-born, Australia-based singer and songwriter retreats inward and emerges with intimate, immersive indie folk anthems buoyed by candid storytelling and expressive vocals. Her music evokes the feeling of sitting face-to-face with Laura as she reads her journal to you aloud. With fearless tenderness, she unpacks unrequited love, painful memories, and personal transformation.

After amassing millions of streams and building a deeply loyal fanbase, she now offers refuge on her 2025 full-length debut album, There’s a Place I Go [out November 14 via Nettwerk].

“I sometimes think of songwriting as a place that I go, a sort of retreat from the rest of the world,” she affirms. “That ‘place’ is the core of why I make music.”

Originally from Winnipeg, Canada, Laura eventually settled in Melbourne. In 2022, she introduced herself with her Light the Candle, Hold the Mirror EP. A year later, The Dreamer reached #2 on Apple Music’s “Breaking Acoustic” chart in nearly 30 countries, with lead single “Wake Up, Breathe In” garnering over 1 million streams on Spotify. She also teamed up with Lawson Hull on fan-favourite “I Imagine You Are Happy”, and duetted with Israel Cannan on “When the Fire Started,” which has since amassed more than 1.5 million streams. Meanwhile, she has captivated crowds from the stage, performing with the likes of Harrison Storm, Winterbourne, Salt Tree, and LANKS.

Over the past few years, There’s a Place I Go came together organically, shaped by Laura’s delicate artistic touch and creative perspective. She spent six weeks in London with producer Tom Iansek [Big Scary, #1 Dads, Maple Glider], expanding her sound and nodding to inspirations including Lizzy McAlpine, Julia Jacklin, and boygenius. Deliberate introspection underscored its composition.

“The album deals with themes of self-reflection, womanhood, and acceptance,” she notes. “A few of the songs touch on childhood, and a few touch on heartbreak. I’m looking back to understand why things took shape the way they did. Each song is a kind of stepping stone to that discovery.”

More than a debut, There’s a Place I Go feels like a moment of becoming — a space where self-discovery meets self-acceptance. “I want everyone to know there’s strength in sensitivity and softness,” she shares. “Sensitivity can be a superpower. It's not a weakness. Personally, I believe it’s what allows me to be a songwriter and make the songs I do.”
