Called &ldquo;one of Mexico&rsquo;s greatest young talents and vocalists&rdquo; by KCRW&rsquo;s Jos&eacute; Galvan, Silvana, who is 23 years old, is the new voice of a movement of independent female artists who have characterized Latin Alternative music over the past decade. She has also been recognized internationally, performing and recording with artists including Uruguayan singer/songwriter Jorge Drexler, Chile&rsquo;s Mon Laferte, Catalan singer Silvia P&eacute;rez Cruz and Spanish group Love of Lesbian, as well as Natalia LaFourcade and most recently, Rodrigo &amp; Gabriela.
Raised singing Mexican son jarocho and baroque choir music, and schooled in jazz, she is an iconoclast who dismisses musical trends for a personal, poetic style that goes straight to the heart of listeners.
&ldquo;My music is made of who I am,&rdquo; she says. By 13, she was performing in local bars (chaperoned by her parents) and within the short few years that followed she truly found her voice.
While attending a seminar for jazz students in Guadalajara, Silvana met guitarist Charlie Hunter, known for his collaborations with artists including Frank Ocean, D&rsquo;Angelo, John Mayer and Norah Jones. After hearing her songs, he suggested they record an album. They turned her parent&rsquo;s guest house into a make-shift studio and made &ldquo;Lo Sagrado&rdquo;, a collaborative album that included her first recorded compositions. A trip to New York followed, during which she plunged into the city&rsquo;s music scene, playing with drummer Antonio S&aacute;nchez, Snarky Puppy&rsquo;s Michael League and other acclaimed musicians known for their vanguard approach to jazz.
Silvana then went back to Mexico, moving to Mexico City to focus inward; she dug deeper into her roots and discovered a newfound confidence in her pure desire to &ldquo;tell stories and make beautiful melodies.&rdquo; She was welcomed by Mexico City&rsquo;s active community of indie musicians and fans, sharing the stage with Julieta Venegas and David Aguilar, among others. Such was the response to her music that she embarked on a sold-out solo national tour concluding with a concert at the capital&rsquo;s Teatro de la Ciudad. She also toured Spain, Argentina, Colombia and Uruguay, and triumphantly returned to New York, invited by Spotify to record her take on Juan Garbiel&rsquo;s &ldquo;Amor Eterno&rdquo;.
The intimate, idiosyncratic songs on her 2018 EP &ldquo;Primeras Canciones&rdquo;, including &ldquo;Te Guardo,&rdquo; &ldquo;Al Norte&rdquo; and &ldquo;Saber Olvidar,&rdquo; have brought her an international following, and a reputation as an artist to watch. That reputation led to Spotify choosing Silvana as one of their inaugural 2020 RADAR Artists.
Silvana returned to New York in February of 2020 and visited Glassnote Music headquarters. After meeting the team, and a spontaneous performance, both parties left mesmerized. She officially joined the Glassnote family shortly after.
&ldquo;I&rsquo;m making the music that I honestly want to do,&rdquo; says Silvana, who can seem as susceptible to the power of her voice as her audiences are. &ldquo;I sing my songs and I feel good. And the miraculous thing is that they make the people who hear them feel good too.&rdquo;

Hand Habits is the songwriting outlet of guitarist Meg Duffy. Fun House is Duffy’s most ambitious Hand Habits album to date. Produced by Sasami Ashworth (SASAMI) and engineered by Kyle Thomas (King Tuff), the record was not intended as a reaction to the pandemic, but it was very much the result of taking a difficult, if much-needed, moment of pause. While Fun House shares some of the same hallmarks as previous Hand Habits releases —a kind of outré queer sensibility, a gentle sense of vulnerability — the record is a marked sonic departure from the often muted tones of 2019’s Placeholder and 2017’s Wildly Idle (Humble Before the Void). The eleven tracks on Fun House sparkle, moving in unexpected directions and represent the turning of a corner, a means of processing grief, trauma, and recovery while coming to a deeper understanding of one’s own history and what it means to step into your own power.

Chris Cohen’s songs initially sound easy. They’re each tiny jewels that unfurl at a leisurely pace, but dig a little deeper and you’ll reach a melancholy core. His previous two albums — 2012’s Overgrown Path, and 2016’s As If Apart — were built from lush, blurry tracks that embedded themselves in your subconscious, like they’d always been there. Chris Cohen, his third solo album, was written and recorded in his Lincoln Heights studio and at Tropico Beauties in Glendale, California over the course of the last two years. Cohen would sing melodies into his phone, fleshing them out on piano, then constructing songs around the melodies, and later, adding lyrics and other instrumentation with the help of Katy Davidson (Dear Nora), Luke Csehak (The Lentils), Zach Phillips, and saxophonist Kasey Knudsen, among others. It is his most straightforward album yet, but it is also the conclusion of an unofficial cycle that began with Overgrown Path.

Life Is Crazy, the accurately titled new record from Sean Nicholas Savage, is unlike anything we’ve heard from the cult balladeer. No drums or bass on the album, the accompaniment consists strictly of pure piano and lush strings, leaving Savage’s songwriting bare to the listener like never before. “for a fresh direction here, i've attempted to reduce the focus to just songwriting and singing. particularly contemplative ballads, which through the years remain closest to my heart. i've aimed for a vocal spirit and energy that closely resembles my live performance, which is an integral part of my identity as an artist not always represented in my recorded work.” Life Is Crazy is a bold and attuned record. Conceived in his transition to theatre, it marks the dawn of a new era for SNS, and a long-awaiting return to the full-length LP format. This will be Savage’s first album release since completing a revered master-cassette trilogy – Magnificent Fist (2016), Yummycoma (2017), and Screamo (2018). Lyrically, Savage grapples with his signature themes of perception, identity, and the unknown, among others. While still abstract, the metaphors and subject matter are effortless and more inviting than ever before. New to Life Is Crazy is a narrative tone removed from time. “there is this thing on the album where i was trying to write to the future to an audience that doesn't exist. you know, we've talked many times about how an audience is exponential, as we see what is niche or outsider today is often more popular tomorrow. there's a lot of that in 'years from tonight' which really sums up how we never know those future versions of ourselves. Also the album closer 'in the silence of the crowd' depicts just how invisible that can feel. That resonates in a few of the other songs too so i thought it was a cool thing to touch on since it feels sometimes like the only hopeful glimmer these days.” Savage began the new decade in Montreal, with a twelve-show run of his highly anticipated musical ‘Please Thrill Me’. This marked an evolution towards stage drama, starring Savage himself, Jane Penny (of TOPS), Roland Pemberton (Cadence Weapon), Adam Byczkowski (Better Person) and Lulu Hughes – who lends her operatic vocals to two songs on Life Is Crazy. Highlight numbers “Thrill Me” and “I Believe In Everything”, taken from the musical with performances wilder and more intimate than even the most outstanding night in the theatre – “having so much context: settings, characters etc. it's like performing songs in 3d. this album is heavily influenced by musical theatre in that way, and by opera as well. I've been consumed with that for the last two years. mostly however, it is an attempt to record something somewhat like my live shows can be in energy and drama, and so it is still somehow perhaps closer to home than ever before.” Life Is Crazy’s collaborators are decidedly new as well. The piano is interpreted and performed by renowned virtuoso Marcin Masecki, winner of the 2005 International Jazz Piano Competition in Moscow, while the strings are arranged and performed by adored Grammy-winning composer Owen Pallett. This stark presentation sits within an artistic mix by producer savant Cecile Believe, of Grammy-nominated SOPHIE notoriety. Life Is Crazy is lush with beautifully ambiguous melodies, reflections and new perceptions, all in a world of their own. The album is a masterpiece at a time of transition, in both the world and the oeuvre, from a unique songwriter and performer of the truest quality. “That’s what makes me wanna sing, something i can never be, and now&amp;hellip; nothing is the way it seems”, Savage beams.
